  • Elderly Patient with Severe Trigeminal Neuralgia Helped by Chiropractic

Elderly Patient with Severe Trigeminal Neuralgia Helped by Chiropractic

The Asian Pacific Chiropractic Journal published a case study in their third quarter 2025 issue that documented chiropractic helping an elderly woman who was suffering from severe trigeminal neuralgia.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, “Trigeminal neuralgia (TN), also known as tic douloureux, is a type of chronic pain disorder that involves sudden attacks of severe facial pain. It affects the trigeminal nerve, or the fifth cranial nerve, which provides feeling and nerve signaling to parts of the head and face. Pain attacks typically last only a few seconds (but can last up to two minutes) and may occur over and over again several times a day.”

This study notes that trigeminal neuralgia is rare and it is more common is women than men. People afflicted with the condition report a debilitating sudden severe electric shock like pain that can be triggered by normal daily activities such as talking, applying make-up, touching the face, or even a light breeze.

In this case, a 72-year-old woman presented herself for chiropractic care. The woman had been suffering with right sided facial pain for the past four years. The woman’s history noted that her facial pain started as a toothache. She went to a general practitioner, who then referred her to a surgeon. The surgeon sent her for an MRI scan. As a result, the woman was given a diagnosis of trigeminal neuralgia.

The woman described the trigeminal neuralgia episodes as excruciating pain that would occur approximately every six months. She was prescribed medication to help with her condition. Her regular ongoing facial pain would occur when she touched her face, combed her hair, brushed her teeth, or while eating. These daily problems had a severe negative impact on the quality of her life. Additionally, the woman reported pain and stiffness in her left shoulder, neck pain, headaches, and the inability to sleep more than five hours per night. She was concerned about the amount of pain killers she was taking to avoid the pain.

An in-depth chiropractic examination including cervical x-rays were conducted. As a result of the examination, specific chiropractic care was started to address the spinal subluxations that were determined to be present. The woman was initially seen twice per week for her chiropractic care.

An update examination was conducted after 12 chiropractic visits. At that time, the woman reported a reduction in her facial pain, neck stiffness, and shoulder aches. At the woman’s second update, she reported further reduction of her pain to the point where she was able to return to her daily chores. Her ability to return to normal activities represented a significant improvement in her quality of life. As her care continued, the study reports that she continued to improve until she was able to sleep normally, return to her career, and spend quality time with her family.

In summing up this case, the authors of the study commented, “Prior to engaging with Chiropractic care the patient had been under the care of ordinary medical practitioners and neurologists and had tried pharmacological interventions to no avail. Chiropractic care has been the first intervention to show marked, long term change for her symptoms, allowing her to return to her normal life.”

  • Chiropractic Improves Quality of Life in a Child with a Multitude of Heath Issues

Chiropractic Improves Quality of Life in a Child with a Multitude of Heath Issues

The third quarter 2025 issue of the Asian Pacific Chiropractic Journal published a case study documenting chiropractic helping a child who was suffering with balance issues, behavioral issues, and respiratory function problems. Complicating this case, the child was also suffering with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder are considered separate neurodevelopmental conditions that can occur together. These two health issues are continuing to grow in numbers and in the focus of healthcare. According to the Ehlers-Danlos Society, “The Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) are a group of 13 heritable connective tissue disorders. The conditions are caused by genetic changes that affect connective tissue. Some features are seen across all types of EDS, including joint hypermobility, skin hyperextensibility, and tissue fragility.”

In this case, an 11-year-old boy with a relatively sedentary lifestyle and a complex history of multiple medical diagnoses was brought in for Chiropractic care for the first time. He had been medically diagnosed with level 2 Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, and anxiety disorder. Additionally, the boy was undergoing testing to confirm a diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome which caused all his joints, including his spine, to be excessively movable, a.k.a. hypermobile.

The boy’s mother described her son’s symptoms as including problems with his balance and coordination. She noted he was always dropping things and had poor posture. She also noted that her son was tired and sleepy all the time. The boy suffered with generalized musculoskeletal pain and had difficulties with everyday tasks including feeding and eating.

A detailed chiropractic examination was performed and modified chiropractic care was started. The chiropractic care had to be modified due to the boy having fragile skin and hypermobile joints from his Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

The study reports that after his first chiropractic adjustment visit, the boy noticed immediate improvement in his breathing. As care continued, the boy’s posture also began to improve. His parents began to notice significant improvements in his abilities to perform daily activities. The study also records that the boy was able to sit through most of the day at school, was more stable and less prone to falling. It was also recorded that the boy was more active, had better balance, had more energy and was overall happier.

This study included a comment made by the boy’s mother as to his progress under chiropractic care. “When I brought him to a Chiropractor, I didn’t have high hopes. I figured anything that could improve his quality of life, which is better than what he has now. I was always so worried about him. The wind could knock him over, and he couldn’t stay upright when sitting for longer than about one minute, whereas he can now sit for most of the day with standing breaks before he gets tired. The biggest thing was after the first appointment and adjustment, he sat in the car and looked at me and said 閃um, I can breathe. I can take a full breath and breathe’.”

  • Ear Infections Gone and Ear Tubes Avoided Due to Chiropractic Care

Ear Infections Gone and Ear Tubes Avoided Due to Chiropractic Care

The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health Chiropractic published the results of a case study on August 21, 2025, documenting the resolution of continual otitis media and the canceling of tympanostomy tubes surgery in a child under chiropractic care.

Otitis media is commonly known as ear infections. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), “Acute otitis media (AOM) is defined as an infection of the middle ear and is the second most common pediatric diagnosis in the emergency department following upper respiratory infections. Although acute otitis media can occur at any age, it is most commonly seen between the ages of 6 to 24 months.”

Surgery to put tubes in the ears is a common medical procedure to deal with recurring otitis media. The NCBI explains that “Tympanostomy tube placement is a standard surgical procedure, particularly in children, to alleviate symptoms associated with middle ear effusion, recurrent acute otitis media, and persistent ear infections.”

This case study begins by pointing out how this health problem is common and expensive. “Otitis media in pediatric patients is the leading cause of medical practitioner visits, most common reason children consume antibiotics or undergo surgery. In the U.S., approximately $4 billion yearly is spent on otitis media healthcare costs.”

In this case, a 13-month-old boy was brought to the chiropractor by his parents. The child had been suffering with reoccurring ear infections causing multiple trips to medical physicians, specialists and the ER room during severe episodes. The boy had been given antibiotics on numerous occasions with no long-term help. The boy’s ENT specialist recommended immediate bilateral tympanostomy. The surgery was scheduled but his parents decided to bring their son to the chiropractor just four days before the surgery was to be performed.

A chiropractic examination was conducted which involved a visual inspection and palpation of the spine both static and in motion. Thermographic heat readings were also performed of the boy’s spine. It was noted that the boy was visibly pulling his ears during the examination. The conclusion of the examination was that there were multiple vertebral subluxations present in a number of areas of his spine. Based on the findings, specific and age-appropriate forms of chiropractic adjustments were started with multiple visits per week.

The study reports that the boy responded quickly to the chiropractic adjustments. His mother reported that after her son’s first adjustment the boy stopped pulling on his ears. The redness and fluid that was coming out of the boy’s ears stopped by his fourth chiropractic adjustment. Due to the immediate positive response, the boy’s mother cancelled the tympanostomy surgery.

Two months after starting chiropractic care, the boy was brought to his pediatrician for a 15-month well-baby visit. At that time, he no longer had any of the previous symptoms of ear infections and was given a clean bill of health. Three months later, when the study was written, the boy had not suffered any issues with otitis media.

The results of this case are summed up in the study’s conclusion. “This case study outlines the resolution of recurrent otitis media and avoidance of tympanostomy surgery in a 13-month-old male patient through subluxation-based chiropractic care. The patient showed immediate improvement and no recurrence of otitis media throughout his care plan.”

  • Child Suffering with Encopresis Helped by Chiropractic

Child Suffering with Encopresis Helped by Chiropractic

The 2025 third quarter issue of the Asian Pacific Chiropractic Journal published a case study documenting the immediate resolution of encopresis in a child after the child started chiropractic care.

The U.S. National Library of Medicine’s National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) describes encopresis as “Encopresis or fecal incontinence is defined as the involuntary passing of stool into inappropriate places such as the underwear in children older than four years of age.” The NCBI further goes on to explain that this condition, “…represents severe psychological distress on children and their families.”

This study’s author points out that this condition is not uncommon and affects about 1% to 4% of children, with boys being more frequently diagnosed with the problem than girls. The study also notes that common treatment for this problem many times involves medications or psychological counseling. Psychological issues either contribute to this problem or are created by this problem.

In this case, a 7-year-old boy was brought to the chiropractor by his grandmother because she was concerned that her grandson’s social, emotional, and psychological well-being were being negatively affected by his ‘accidents’ which often happened at school, on the soccer field, or in front of his friends. Because of his condition, the boy would regularly pack a backup set of underwear and clothes to change into while he was at school.

According to the boy’s family, his accidents had been happening since early childhood. There was no history of trauma or accidents before his problem started. The boy had been prescribed antibiotics 3 or 4 times in his lifetime for various illnesses. The family reported that the boy did have a history of learning difficulties.

A chiropractic evaluation revealed postural asymmetry in the boy’s pelvis with one hip being higher than the other as well as a pelvic rotation. Additional postural irregularities were observed in the boy’s shoulders and the position of his head. Neurological testing revealed some additional positive findings.

With family permission, specific forms of chiropractic care were started on the boy. The boy was brought back two weeks later for a follow-up visit to see what type of progress had been made. At that visit, the boy’s mother reported that her son had not had a single accident since his first chiropractic visit. This represented the longest period of time the boy had ever gone without an accident. She also reported that her son was fully participating in school and at soccer. From that point, the study reports no further incidents of the boy suffering from accidents.

  • Chiropractic Increased Competitive Swimming Performance and Reduced Back and Joint Pain

Chiropractic Increased Competitive Swimming Performance and Reduced Back and Joint Pain

The Asian Pacific Chiropractic Journal published a case study in their 2025 third quarter issue that documents the reduction in back and joint pain along with an increase in performance for a child competitive swimmer.

The authors of this study begin by noting that chiropractic care goes well beyond just pain care. “Chiropractic care beyond musculoskeletal pain remains arguably the most promising area of emerging research. Adjusting and correcting the vertebral subluxation has led to discoveries regarding the brain and how it drives muscles.” They also describe several additional studies showing that chiropractic care improves brain function and human performance.

In this case study, a 10-year-old boy was brought in for chiropractic care for the first time. His primary complaints were lower back pain, right shoulder pain and some ankle pain. The boy was a competitive swimmer and was hoping to make the State Swim Team if he could improve his swim times. He was currently training five days per week.

A comprehensive chiropractic examination was performed which included a variety of postural analyses showing asymmetries in multiple areas. The result of the examination was the determination that multiple areas of vertebral subluxation were present in the boy’s spine. According to the study, “The agreed aims of care were to improve swimming times by enhancing the function of the nervous system.”

Chiropractic care was started with one regular adjustment visit every other week. Additionally, the boy would also receive extra adjustments after swimming competitions. A reevaluation was performed every 12 visits where the results of the exam findings were compared to the initial visit findings. The boy’s swim times were also tracked to determine if there was an increase in his swimming performance.

The results of the study showed that as the boy’s subluxations improved, there was a significant decrease in his shoulder, ankle and low back pains. Additionally, the study recorded a dramatic improvement in the boy’s swimming times. The study notes that after chiropractic care, the boy was able to achieve a nearly 10% reduction off his original 200m freestyle time, improving it by 29.2 seconds. He was also able to improve his 200m breaststroke time by 12.7 seconds. As a result of his performances, the boy was able to qualify for the State Swim Team.

Since there was no change in the boy’s training schedule, the authors of this study attribute the boy’s increased swimming performance to his chiropractic care. They stated, “We, as Chiropractors, know that the potential of a person can be impacted by the presence of vertebral subluxations. The child’s swimming times are a clear demonstration of the potential that can be achieved by having no interference on the nervous system.”

  • Woman Struck by a Car as a Child Helped by Chiropractic

Woman Struck by a Car as a Child Helped by Chiropractic

On May 13, 2025, the Journal of Contemporary Chiropractic published the results of a case of a woman who was suffering with a variety of physical and functional health issues stemming from being hit by a car years earlier when she was a child.

The study begins by point out that pedestrians being hit by cars is a growing issue. They state, “Traffic-related pedestrian injuries are a growing public health threat worldwide. In 2024, the global economic burden of pedestrian and motor vehicle collisions involving both fatal and non-fatal crash injuries was estimated to approximate USD$1.8 trillion.”

The authors also point out that this problem is increasing in the United States. “In the United States, children aged 0-15 years experience the highest rate of non-fatal injuries.” They note that children 15 years or younger, “…account for 30% of all pedestrian injuries and 8% of all pedestrian deaths.”

In this case, a 26-yr-old woman was referred by her co-worker to the chiropractor. The woman was suffering with left leg dysfunction resulting in an impairment to the way she walked. Because of her left leg issue, the woman was wearing a left leg brace that ran from the back of her knee to her foot.

Additionally, she was also suffering with urinary incontinence. The woman explained that she felt like she needed to urinate every 12-15 minutes both day and night. She noted that to avoid wearing adult diapers, her activities were very limited to areas where she had quick access to a bathroom.

The woman’s history revealed that at age 4, she was running across a street when she was hit by a motor vehicle. She recalled having been dragged approximately one block with the car tires rolling over her legs and lower body. As a result, she was comatose for 8 days having suffered multiple head injuries. Following her initial hospitalization, she received ongoing physical therapy at a local Children’s Hospital. At age 18, she was told that she would have to deal with these issues for the rest of her life.

A chiropractic examination and x-rays revealed significant pelvic misalignment with the conclusion of subluxation of her pelvis and adjacent structures. Specific forms of chiropractic adjustments were then started.

To evaluate the change after the first adjustments, the woman was instructed to stand on her feet and walk a few steps. The woman’s gait had immediately changed, and she could walk more normally. Seeing these changes, the woman became emotional and began to cry.

After her first chiropractic visit, the woman no longer needed to use her leg brace. Two weeks after starting chiropractic, the woman also reported that her urinary problems had improved. She now only needed to go to the restroom every 2-3 hours. Because her walking and urinary issues were both dramatically improved, the woman reported an improved quality of life.

  • Breech Pregnancy Helped at 37 Weeks with Chiropractic Care

Breech Pregnancy Helped at 37 Weeks with Chiropractic Care

The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health Chiropractic published the results of a case study on June 30, 2025, documenting the resolution of transverse lie breech pregnancy through chiropractic of a woman who was 37 weeks into her pregnancy. A transverse lie breech pregnancy is when the baby is in a sideways position. On or after the 30th week of pregnancy, babies are expected to be head-down.

The study authors begin by noting that “Similar to the general population, pregnant women present regularly to chiropractors to address musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions.” They also point out that many pregnant women seek chiropractic care for conditions other than musculoskeletal pain. A growing number of women are seeking chiropractic for breech issues related to their pregnancy.

In this case, a woman who was into her 37th week of her second pregnancy, went to the chiropractor. The woman reported that her midwife had determined that the baby was in a transverse lie position. The woman was also suffering with chronic lower back and hip pain.

The woman had received successful chiropractic care during her first pregnancy and after an automobile accident about one year prior to this current pregnancy. The woman and her midwife had unsuccessfully tried to resolve the breech pregnancy through specific exercises and external force, known as external cephalic version or EVC.

After a chiropractic examination, the woman received chiropractic care utilizing the Webster Technique. This technique is a specific chiropractic procedure designed to decrease intrauterine constraint. The result is often that the baby can then turn after the non-invasive procedure is performed.

After the chiropractic care and an additional midwife EVC procedure, the baby moved to a vertex lie position. There were no adverse reactions from these procedures. As a result, the woman was able to deliver vaginally at full term without any complications.

In the discussion and conclusion of this study, the authors wrote, “Chiropractors and midwives share similar goals in their approach to healthcare and particularly in the care of pregnant women. Both professions seek to mitigate or eliminate variables that lead to traumatic birth and therefore injury to both mother and child.” They continued, “This case demonstrates the potential benefit of the Webster Technique in resolving transverse lie fetal positioning to facilitate vaginal delivery.”

  • Resolution of Headaches, Improvement in Energy and Mental Clarity with Chiropractic

Resolution of Headaches, Improvement in Energy and Mental Clarity with Chiropractic

In the third quarter issue of the Asia-Pacific Chiropractic Journal published on July 1, 2025, are the results of a case study showing chiropractic helping a patient with chronic headaches as well as producing improvements in energy and mental clarity.

The authors of this study begin by stating, “It has been well established in the literature that Chiropractic is indicated as an effective care modality for headache sufferers. It has also been well established that forward head posture (thoracic kyphosis) contributes to headaches.” They also note that “While postural concerns have long been a focus of Chiropractors across the broad spectrum of techniques and practices, the neurological changes that occur when posture is compromised, and the impacts they may have not only on pain but on cognition and performance are yet to be explored.” This study not only reports on the results with headaches, but also the positive effect chiropractic can have on mental functions.

In this case, a 30-year-old man who was suffering with headaches presented himself for chiropractic care. The man was an IT professional, which meant he spent a large amount of time in front of a computer screen. He reported that he had been suffering from intermittent headaches for approximately one year and they were getting worse.

The man reported that his headaches were worse in the morning or after he exercised. This was an issue for him as he was fairly active and had been a long-distance runner for years. He described the headaches as a dull and tight band around his head that he rated as 7 out of 10, with 10 being the worst possible pain. He also reported that his headaches were accompanied by blurred vision and an increased sensitivity to light. Additionally, the man also suffered from neck pain and poor posture.

A chiropractic examination including x-rays was performed and it was determined that subluxations were present. With this finding, a course of specific chiropractic care was started at the rate of three visits per week. In addition to the chiropractic, advice was given to the man on improvement in workstation ergonomics and correct pillow height while sleeping. He was advised not to change his exercise or workout routine to make it easier to determine if any changes were due to receiving chiropractic care. No additional exercises or recommendations were given.

A review was performed during the fourth week of chiropractic care. The review showed that the man’s head and shoulder posture had improved. He reported that he was experiencing approximately a 90% improvement in the frequency of his headaches. He also noted that his energy levels had improved and that his mind felt “clearer and less fuzzy.” He stated that he was sleeping better, and his overall well-being had improved.

A ten-week review continued to show measurable improved posture. The man reported that he was now 100% free of headaches. He said that the quality of his exercise and long-distance running had improved. He stated that for him, chiropractic care was life-changing and all conditions that he had sought chiropractic care for had improved.

  • Symptoms of Long Covid and Sleep Apnea Helped by Chiropractic

Symptoms of Long Covid and Sleep Apnea Helped by Chiropractic

On July 1, 2025, the Asia-Pacific Chiropractic Journal published a case study documenting the improvement of a patient under chiropractic care who was suffering with a number of Long Covid symptoms including obstructive sleep apnea. The American Lung Association describes this condition by saying “Sleep apnea is a common disorder that interrupts sleep due to upper airways that repeatedly collapse when throat muscles relax during sleep, blocking the flow of air. Common signs of sleep apnea include snoring and choking or gasping while asleep.”

On the CDC website it states, “Long COVID is defined as a chronic condition that occurs after SARS-CoV-2 infection and is present for at least 3 months. Long COVID includes a wide range of symptoms or conditions that may improve, worsen, or be ongoing.”

In this case, a 64-year-old man went to the chiropractor seeking help for his health issues. He reported that two years before his chiropractic visit, he suffered with an acute COVID-19 infection. At that time, the man was treated medically with antibody infusions. Since his COVID infection, he also reported a recurrence of atrial fibrillation, a problem he had several years earlier.

Since his COVID, the man was also suffering with mild obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and was medically placed on continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. Additionally, since his COVID, the man reported that he was not able to sleep more than three or four hours per night and was extremely sensitive to cold temperatures. The man stated that previously he was playing tennis 2-4 times per week but was now unable to play at all for the past several months prior to seeking chiropractic.

A thorough chiropractic examination determined that subluxations were present. The examination also revealed that the man had an elevated blood pressure. With these findings, specific forms of chiropractic adjustments were started at the rate of two visits per week.

By the third chiropractic visit, the study records that the man’s sleep apnea had improved to where he was now getting as much as 5 to 6 hours of sleep per night. Additionally, the man’s blood pressure had significantly lowered. He also noted that he had more energy, was much less fatigued, and his sensitivity to cold temperatures had returned to a normal level like before his COVID-19 infection.

One of the most revealing aspects of the man’s improvement under chiropractic was that after several chiropractic visits, he was able to once again resume playing tennis as he normally did prior to his bout with COVID-19.

  • Meniere’s Disease Helped by Chiropractic – a Case Study

Meniere's Disease Helped by Chiropractic – a Case Study

The Asia-Pacific Chiropractic Journal published a case study on July 1, 2025, documenting the improvement in dizziness and hearing loss under chiropractic care of a patient with Meniere’s Disease. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, “Meniere’s disease is a disorder of the inner ear that causes severe dizziness (vertigo), ringing in the ears (tinnitus), hearing loss, and a feeling of fullness or congestion in the ear.”

The authors of this study note that “Meniere’s Disease is a rare and chronic inner ear disorder marked by recurrent episodes of vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, or feelings of fullness in the ear. During attacks of Meniere’s Disease, balance may be compromised, headaches may occur, and nausea and vomiting may accompany the attacks.”

The study points out that medical care for Meniere’s disease is geared toward the treatment of symptoms and usually involves a pharmacological approach. In some cases, dietary changes are made as well as trigger avoidance and stress management.

In this case, a 29-year-old man sought chiropractic care for help with episodes of dizziness and hearing loss. The man had been suffering with these episodes for the past two years. He had been previously diagnosed by an ear, nose, and throat specialist (ENT), with Meniere’s disease. The man reported that the episodes of dizziness had decreased but the hearing loss was getting worse, and he was experiencing a fullness and ringing sound in his left ear. After a recent plane flight, his hearing loss got more severe, and he was prescribed hearing aids.

The man’s hearing issues were having a profound impact on his daily life. The study records that he was “…experiencing difficulties with reading, concentrating, travelling, being in loud or public places, going outside, engaging in hobbies and sports, and even struggling with meeting family, talking to friends, working, sleeping or studying.”

A chiropractic examination including nerve scans and spinal x-rays revealed the presence of multiple vertebral subluxations. With these findings, a course of specific chiropractic adjustments was started at the rate of three visits per week.

On the tenth chiropractic visit, the man reported that he was no longer wearing his hearing aids. He noted that the hearing in his left ear had returned. On visit 12, the man reported that he was experiencing a significant reduction in spinning spells and dizziness.

On the man’s 24th chiropractic visit, he reported that he was in a better mood and felt a reduction in his anxiety. The man’s ENT doctor confirmed that his hearing had improved and was now within normal limits. Because of his improvements in all his issues, he was able to return to normal social interactions and daily activities, thus dramatically improving his overall quality of life.

In the conclusion of the study, the authors wrote, “Chiropractic care may impact hearing loss and dizziness related to Meniere’s disease, and provide a conservative, non-pharmaceutical intervention that can move towards remission of symptoms.”
